Library Offers Digital Magazines

The Pickaway County District Public Library is offering 155 digital magazine titles through its website. The titles can be read on computers as well as on apps for Apple and Android.

The new service is called Zinio and is offered through the Digital Downloads service. Digital magazine issues are available as soon as they appear on the newsstand, so there’s no waiting period, and they are always available.

Patrons can start at the library webpage and click on Zinio where they can browse titles that include Newsweek (out of print as of Dec 31, 2012), Consumer Reports, Bicycling, Esquire, Inked and many more.

A patron user guide is available at http://tinyurl.com/digi-magazines. This walks you through the process of creating your accounts, selecting magazines, etc. – complete with explanations and screenshots.

The library staff is happy to answer questions and help you get started with this new service. Two online accounts will be needed – one for the library with a valid library card and one for the Zinio site.

Once patrons choose a title, they are transferred to the Zinio site.  To choose another title, patrons will need to click on the browser tab labeled “Return to library collection.”

There is no limit to the number of magazines patrons can select for their “library.” An e-mail notification will be sent when a new issue becomes available.

To read some of the titles on computers, patrons will need to download the Zinio Reader 4. Tablet users will use the Zinio app for their device. Kindle Fire users can download the Zinio app from the Zinio Help site (http://www.zinio.com/help/). Barnes and Noble does not allow the Zinio app to be downloaded from their app store. Zinio may be accessible through the browser depending on the memory of your Nook.

Although there are apps available, in order to add new magazines to your library, you will need to do so from a computer.

Some of the digital titles available are: Cosmopolitan, Taste of Home, Reader’s Digest, and National Geographic. There are many more magazines covering popular and entertainment topics, as well as men’s and women’s fitness, cooking, decorating, art, technology and crafts.
